Ikat (pronounced ee-kaht) is a traditional textile dyeing and weaving technique in which yarns are meticulously tied and dyed in specific patterns before they are woven into fabric. Because the threads are dyed before weaving, perfectly aligning them on the loom is nearly impossible. This slight misalignment gives true ikat textiles their signature, dynamic "feathered" or blurred edges. While the term is Indonesian, the craft of ikat is ancient and can be found globally—from Central Asia to Japan, India, and Latin America. In many cultures, creating ikat textiles is a celebrated artisanal skill, and historically, the fabrics were highly prized symbols of wealth, status, and spiritual protection.
