Khadi is a versatile hand-spun & hand-woven natural fiber cloth from India, typically made from cotton but sometimes incorporating silk or wool. Championed by Mahatma Gandhi in the early 20^th century, Khadi became a powerful symbol of Indian self-reliance, independence, and resistance against British manufactured goods. Gandhi promoted Khadi as a way to generate self-employment and support self-sufficiency for marginalized rural communities in India. This still is important for rural communities in India today.
